Making the decision to close Joan & Ed’s Deli after 33 years was one of the toughest decisions we’ve ever had to make. This was both our personal and professional life for so many years, that we couldn’t imagine a life without the deli. But all things must come to an end, and it was time to retire and enjoy our life.
When we announced the closing, we were overwhelmed by the outpouring of well-wishes from customers and the community as a whole. We never imagined the impact the restaurant had, as well as the emotional connection so many members of the community had to the restaurant and our food. It meant a lot to us that so many expressed their feelings for the deli and what it had meant to them. Some of these statements are scattered throughout this book.
Over the years, everyone has been asking us for our recipes, but we kept them strictly confidential. However, so many people had asked us for recipes during our last few weeks, that we decided it was time to share our secrets with you so you can always have a piece of Joan & Ed’s!
We dedicate this cookbook to all of our wonderful customers and staff, without whom we wouldn’t have been able to serve the Metro-West community for as long as we did.We had many staff who worked with us for 15 to 30 years, but we’d like to make a special dedication to our longtime friend, business partner, and chef John Fitzgerald. John was with us from the beginning, but unfortunately had to retire due to a medical accident in 2009. He worked with us tirelessly on each of these recipes, perfecting them over the years, before we served them to you.
Also a special thanks to our daughter, Mindy. Without her help this book would never have been completed. She was very instrumental in designing our menus and daily specials sheets, along with working in the office and as a hostess throughout the years. She was always a ray of sunshine in the restaurant who will be missed by customers and employees alike.
